50th anniversary: Salami vows to make UNIBEN world-class varsity

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Professor Lilian Salami, has restated her commitment to make the university a world-class institution, CAMPUS GIST reports.

Salami stated this in an address at the University of Benin 50th Founders’ Day Inter-faith Thanksgiving service of the institution, held on Monday, in Benin City.

The Vice Chancellor, who gave a historical perspective of the University of Benin, said the University which started with barely 100 students, had produced over a 350,000 graduands - many of them excelling in various fields of endeavors.

She restated her commitment to make the University a world-class institution, revealing plans to achieve the mission and vision of the university under her.

“In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, this administration has continued to execute her strategic plans and restructuring to ensure that we meet our promise of creating an environment that is conducive for our dedicated staff and learning for our dear students.”

In his sermon, the president, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Reverend Felix Omobude, urged relevant stakeholders to live beyond the acquisition of fame, wealth, among others but to build an enduring legacy.

Rev. Omobude appealed to government at all level to provide free and compulsory education to every Nigerian child from primary to at least junior secondary schools.

At the thanksgiving, monitored live by CAMPUS GIST, the PFN president called on stakeholders to ensure the curtailment of incessant strikes in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

High point of the event was special prayers for Nigeria and the University from both Muslims and Christian clerics, choir and hymn ministration, cutting of the anniversary cake, among others.

The UNIBEN 50th anniversary celebration continued on Wednesday, November 24 with a press briefing by the institution’s vice chancellor to mark her one year in office.

Salami, who assumed office December 2, 2019 taking over from the erstwhile vice chancellor Faraday Orunmwese, was appointed VC in October, 2019.

As the 10th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Lilian Salami is the second female VC and first alumnus of the University to become vice chancellor.
