EXCLUSIVE! UNIBEN TUITION HIKE: OLD STUDENTS ARE EXEMPTED, SAYS PRO

The University of Benin Public Relations Officer (PRO) has affirmed that the recent increment in tuition fees and general school
charges has nothing to do with the old and existing students of the school.
The PRO in the person of Mr. Michael Osasuyi, in a chat, made this exclusively known to our correspondent.

In his words, the news about the increment is true but “only meant for new students”. According to him, “old and existing students are exempted from such charges”.

Meanwhile, earlier today, the Students’ Union PRO, Ehiabhi Goodnews in a broadcast, debunked the news saying that the union will resist any attempt to increase the charges (if any).
In his words, “the Students’ Union Government will resist any school fees increment, if any”, and urged students to resume on November 12th as earlier announced.

It would be recalled that the school management through a memo signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mrs O. A. Oshodin, announced an increment of the school charges. The school fees for old students was increased from #14,400 and #12,400 to #45,000 and #41,400 for Science and Non-Science courses respectively. That of new students was pegged at #73,400 and #69,900 from #55,400 and #49,500 for Medical and Non-Medical courses respectively.

Also, the acceptance fee for new intakes is now #80,000 and #60,000 for Medicals and Non-Medical students respectively, as against the #50,000 initially charged.

The hostel fee for NDDC was increased to #35,000 from #25,000, Hall 5 to #25,000 from #12,500 and others, #20,000 from #9,000. Postgraduate and part-time students were also not left out of the new fees regime.

A student of the school who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said that the inter-faculty transfer form was also increased from #50,000 to #100,000 of which his friend had no other option than to pay the said fee.
