### Tips: Learn how to calculate your CGPA

Some departments in the Univeristy of Benin has pasted their results on the notice board. While others have seen theirs on Uniben kofa page. This post is to enable students know how to calculate their GPA.

It is vital that all university students, especially Freshers (100 level), study and learn how to calculate their GPA upon release of each semester’s result and to also
make up the cumulative at the end of every session. Doing this will help you evaluate your academic performance from time to time and improve.
RESULTS
Students Performance in semester examinations and assessments for courses/subjects/modules are
classified into letter Grades (from A, B, C, D, E,to F) which represent a range of score or marks a student can obtain. A particular grade point is
assigned to these grades, see examples below.
70 - 100%           A.                             5.00
60 – 69%            B.                             4.00
50 – 59%            C.                             3.00
45 – 49%            D.                             2.00
00 – 44%            F.                             0.00
Every Course carries a fixed
number of Credit Units (CU). Quality points (QP) are derived from multiplying the Credit Units (CU)
for a course by the Grade Point (GP) earned by
the student in that course.
Eg. If in a 3 Credit Unit course(credit load or work load) , a student scores
67% which is a B with a Grade Point of 4, the
Quality points for the student in that course is 3 x 4 = 12.
Grade Point Average (GPA) is derived by dividing the Total Quality point (TQP) for the semester by
the Total Credit Unit (TCU) for that semester.
Eg. If in a semester, a student earned 84 quality
points for 22 Credit Units, the students GPA is
84/22 = 3.81
Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is derived by adding the Total Quality Points (TQP) for all semesters to date and dividing by the
Total Credit Units (TCU) for all semesters to
date.
Eg. If a student earns a QP of 84 for 22 CU in the first semester and earns QP of 93 for 23 CU in the second semester, His CGPA is TQP/TCU =
(84+ 93) / (22 + 23) = 177/45 =3.93

Lets work an example together on  how to calculate GPA and CGPA
First Year(100 level), First Semester

 Course Code Credit Unit (CU) Letter Grade Grade Point (GP) Quality Point (QP) = CU x GP AAA 111 3 B 4 12 BBB 111 2 C 3 6 CCC 111 2 C 3 6 DDD 111 3 A 5 15 EEE 111 3 A 5 15 FFF 111 GGG 111 HHH 111 3 3 3 D C A 2 3 5 6 9 15 Total QP = 84, CU= 22,  TQP = 84, TCU = 22 GPA = QP/CU = 84/22 = 3.81 CGPA = TQP/TCU = 84/22 = 3.81 22 84
First Year(100 level), Second Semester
 Course Code Credit Unit (CU) Letter Grade Grade Point (GP) Quality Point (QP) = CU x GP AAA 121 3 B 4 12 BBB 121 2 C 3 6 CCC 121 2 C 3 6 DDD 121 3 A 5 15 EEE 121 3 A 5 15 FFF 121 GGG 121 HHH 121 III 121 3 3 3 3 D C A C 2 3 5 3 6 9 15 9 Total QP = 93, CU= 25,  TQP = 93, TCU = 25 GPA = QP/CU = 93/25 = 3.72 CGPA = TQP/TCU = 177/45 = 3.93 25 93
